Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Child labor remains a persistent issue in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where families often rely on the income generated by their children to support household needs. In Shinkafi Local Government Area, Zamfara State, local radio has emerged as a key tool in raising awareness about the negative effects of child labor and advocating for children’s rights. Radio programs aimed at educating the public about the importance of education, child protection laws, and the detrimental effects of child labor have been integral in challenging long-held societal norms and encouraging behavioral change (Musa & Abdullahi, 2023; Abdullahi & Yusuf, 2024). This study seeks to explore the role of local radio in combating child labor in Shinkafi, focusing on the effectiveness of radio campaigns and their impact on both the awareness and actions of the local community.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the efforts of government and non-governmental organizations to combat child labor, it remains a significant challenge in rural areas like Shinkafi.
